I was living out in the country in Maryland on an old farm that belonged to Napoleons’ wife Josephine.
Maryland is famous for its hunt country. The Farm was just north of Baltimore. A realestate developer had
just purchased it as he was a hunt enthusiast. There were two animals on the farm when we moved there;
Blacky, a half percheronthoroughbred hunter and Ee yore, a Donkey. Ee yore tended to hang around the barn
a lot. Every morning I would get up to feed my horse, and then I would walk up the aisle and around the corner
to fill up the water buckets. I keep the feed and hay in a stall next to my horse. I was having a problem with rats
chewing holes in the bags of grain. I didn’t quite now who to handle the situation. As I got the water I would leave
the door open to the feed stall. This problem I had with the grain went on for months. One day I wore a pair of shoes
instead of boots. The shoes didn’t make noise as I walked around the barn. I went to get the water. On my return I
found Ee yore the donkey rushing out of the stall. Watching this I went through my routine once more to see what
would happen. As I walked up the isle Ee yore would run into the stall and bite a hole in the grain bag. As He heard
my steps he would run back and hide on the other side of the stall where I couldn’t see him. He had been doing this
for months before I caught him. I had never disciplined him not to steal the grain. He just was so smart he knew he
wasn’t supposed to take it. Now we knew why Ee yore was so fat. I put a quick end to his theft by closing the door when
I wasn’t there! Instead of a grey rat my thief was just fat grey donkey.
